Are my glasses reimbursable?

Many people wonder if children's glasses will actually be reimbursed and if so, how exactly. We are happy to explain it to you; it all depends on your health insurance. In any case, an eye test for children is always reimbursed as long as you have a referral from your family doctor, the child health clinic or the school doctor.

Often if you only have a basic insurance, the costs of glasses will unfortunately not be reimbursed. Depending on the additional insurance, part or all of your child's glasses will be reimbursed. A clear overview of all health insurers and reimbursements can be found here:

If, as a parent, you want to be reimbursed for glasses for your children, you can co-insure your children on your policy. In the case of the following medical indications, children up to the age of 18 will be reimbursed for glasses under the basic insurance:

  • strong myopia (more than -6 dioptres)
  • a deviation of more than 10 dioptres
  • strong cylinder formation (from 4 dioptres)
  • squint
  • after lens defect surgery
  • partial sightedness due to a medical condition or injury.
  • No deductible applies, but a personal contribution of €59 per lens applies.

If you do not know exactly how you are insured, you can always ask your health insurer. Who knows, you might be positively surprised by the amount of money you get back.

Good to know!

We're almost at the end of the year, and that's why it's extra important to check what's going on with your health insurance. Maybe you are still entitled to an amount. Or perhaps you have already used up your deductible, and it would be extra advantageous for you to buy new glasses right now.
